Latitude Maritime Leads Pre-Delivery Training for Naval Large Tug CFAV CANSO

In January 2026, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Latitude Maritime provided familiarization training ahead of the delivery of the Naval Large Tug CFAV CANSO. Over 31 sailors and officers took part in a program combining classroom instruction, dockside drills, and at-sea exercises, supervised by instructors and experts in the vessel’s key systems. This essential step is intended to ensure the safe and efficient commissioning of this new class of harbour tugs.

Latitude Maritime is proud to have contributed to the pre-delivery familiarization training of the Naval Large Tug CFAV CANSO, a key step in commissioning this next-generation vessel.

The training took place from January 5 to 13, 2026, in Halifax (Nova Scotia) and brought together more than 31 sailors and officers, who will make up pariticipate in the future crews of this class of tugs.

Comprehensive, structured, and tailored training

Led by two Latitude Maritime instructors, Francois Laplante and Richard Caron, with the support of a dedicated crew and technical specialists, this training aimed to ensure safe, effective, and progressive familiarization with the CFAV CANSO prior to its official delivery.

The program was structured around:

  • five days of classroom instruction and practical training alongside,

  • Two full days of at-sea training, allowing participants to see the equipment in real operation and carry out supervised maneuvers.

The instructional approach was tailored to the varying levels of knowledge and experience of future crew members, fostering hands-on learning immediately applicable on board.

High-level technical expertise

The training benefited from the direct participation of experts on the vessel’s main systems, including:

  • Engine and propulsion

  • Winch systems

  • Firefighting system (FiFi)

  • Electrical and electronic systems

These modules were delivered with the support of partner companies Fire Fighting Systems, DMT Marine Equipment, Techsol Marine, MAN Engines and Schottel, whose expertise enabled the crews to gain an in-depth understanding of the capabilities, operational limits, and best practices for the use and maintenance of the vessel’s critical systems.

A key step before delivery

The days at sea gave participants the opportunity to:

  • Observe the equipment in real conditions,

  • Actively take part in operations,

  • Validate procedures,

  • Strengthen coordination between deck and engine teams.

This pre-delivery training is a decisive step in ensuring the safety, operational performance, and reliability of the Naval Large Tug, CFAV CANSO, from the time of its entry into service.

Latitude Maritime’s commitment

Through this initiative, Latitude Maritime reaffirms its commitment to:

  • Supporting high-quality training programs,

  • Promoting the transfer of technical knowledge,
