Latitude Maritime - Specialized Commissioning Training for Naval Large Tugs
Tailored professional training for the Royal Canadian Navy to master the advanced technology of the Naval Large Tugs upon commissioning. Needs assessment, content development, and hands-on onboard training with experts. Summary: Bespoke training for the Royal Canadian Navy on newly commissioned Naval Large Tugs, covering needs analysis, curriculum development, and expert-led practical instruction onboard.
The modernization of the Royal Canadian Navy’s port capabilities is taking a major step forward with the arrival of the Naval Large Tugs (NLT), built by Groupe Océan in Quebec. These next-generation tugs, equipped with azimuthing propulsion, integrated bridges, automated winches, and advanced FiFi systems, deliver power, precision, and safety. However, their technological complexity requires thorough crew preparation to fully realize their potential.
To meet this need, Latitude Maritime—formerly François Laplante Consultant—designed and deployed a comprehensive, tailored training program based on needs analysis, the development of adapted content, and the implementation of both theoretical and practical training.
The initial analysis defined the key missions (harbor towing, escort, emergency assistance, firefighting), examined the operational context (demanding weather conditions, precision maneuvers, inter-service coordination), and identified the critical technologies to be mastered. Competencies were mapped by role, and risk scenarios were integrated into the Safety Management System.
The training content was designed to address both technical and human aspects: in-person courses on vessel architecture and operational safety, procedures and checklists for all maneuvers, integration of human factors (BRM), visual training aids, and simulator sessions to replicate real scenarios. Job aids and a competency matrix ensure traceability and continuous evaluation.
Implementation combines classroom courses, practical simulator workshops, and onboard training during commissioning (HAT/SAT). A team of seasoned Latitude Maritime experts directly supports professional mariners, providing targeted coaching to secure initial maneuvers and optimize performance in real-world conditions. Training of internal instructors ensures the sustainability of competencies.
This approach enables a rapid ramp-up despite system complexity, standardization of practices, and strengthened operational mastery. At Latitude Maritime, we turn advanced technology into operational advantage, so NLT crews sail safely, confidently, and efficiently from day one.
